Microscopy application specialist (m/f/d)
wanted for the next possible date at the Infectious Diseases Imaging Platform of Center for Integrative Infectious Diseases Research (CIID).
We are seeking a motivated microscopy application specialist to join the team of the Infectious Diseases Imaging Platform (IDIP, www.idip-heidelberg.org) at the Center for Integrative Infectious Disease Research (CIID, https://ciid-heidelberg.de/), University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany. The successful candidate will support high-end imaging infrastructure for infectious diseases research as well as advanced training in pathogen imaging. The microscopy application specialist will be involved in ongoing research projects in the context of an EU-funded international consortium (SHIELD) that aims to understand the mechanisms of viral entry of flaviviruses (DENV, WNV, YFV, Zika), mammarenaviruses (LASV) and henipaviruses (Hendra, Nipah) and develop new therapeutic interventions.

Your tasks
Work under enhanced biosafety containment level 2 and 3 (BSL-2 and 3) is planned and will consist of the following:
- Providing support for microscopy applications within the SHIELD consortium and CIID with particular focus on the application of live cell imaging and microscopy-based drug screening under enhanced biosafety containment
- Development of microscopy-based drug screening assays
- Image analysis, data evaluation and interpretation
- Testing / benchmarking commercial and academic workflows and reagents for microscopy applications in particular for high-content screening and feedback microscopy
- Molecular and cell biology (cloning, cell culture, generation of stably-transfected cell lines and complex model systems)
- Sample preparation for microscopy (immunofluorescence, living cells, 3D model systems)
- Support the IDIP in technical and organizational matters
- Limited introduction of users to microscopy systems
- Involvement in educational and outreach activities
Your Profile
- A PhD degree in the life sciences
- Knowledge and hands-on experience in quantitative light microscopy. Experience with live cell imaging and high content screening microscopy would be an advantage
- Broad molecular and cell biology knowledge. Experience with the infectious disease research would be an advantage
- Experience with biological sample preparation for advanced light microscopy. Extensive knowledge on labelling techniques, dyes and fluorophores would be an advantage
- Experience with bioimage data visualization, analysis and interpretation. Familiarity with relevant open source and commercial image analysis software packages
- Programming skills (e.g., R, Python, Java) and experience in the development and implementation of machine learning based methods would be an advantage
- Experience in basic molecular biology and cell biology techniques such as cloning, transfection, cell culture etc is essential
- Willingness to work in a biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories with different pathogens is essential
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with users and principal investigators with diverse cultural backgrounds within the research community
- Good proficiency in written and spoken English is essential
- High self-motivation, independence, proactive, analytical and solution-oriented workstyle
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as strong organisational skills
