PhD Student (m/f/d)

wanted for the next possible date at the Centre for Infectious Diseases for the Parasitology.

We are looking to recruit a PhD student for a Gates Foundation funded project determining the pharmacokinetic properties necessary for insecticide uptake in the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae sl. The appointee will join the Parasitology Unit in the Centre for Infectious Diseases, Heidelberg and be affiliated with Prof Carsten Hopf at the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy, Mannheim. We will also work closely with other partners as part of a consortia for novel insecticide discovery, specifically with Dr David Hong, University of Liverpool, UK.

Your tasks

Key responsibilities are (but not limited to):

  • Adult phenotypic bioassays
  • Laser micro dissection of mosquito cuticle
  • Development of novel exposure routes
  • Cuticular characterisation of insecticide resistant lines
  • Preparing samples for downstream LC-MS and MALDI-imaging

Your profile

  • BSc and MSc or equivalent in a relevant field
  • Effective English communication, both written and verbal and experience working both in a solo setting and as part of a team
  • Ability to solve problems and design experiments
  • Ability to work independently after appropriate training
