The position is limited to 3 years with option of further extension. Salary is according to TV-L.

At present, chemotherapeutic drugs are infused at constant rates according to empirically established therapy protocols for single drugs or drug combinations. This project aims at combining current knowledge about signaling pathways and dynamical models of pathways targeted by chemotherapeutic drugs to suggest improved chemotherapy regimens that can be tested in clinical studies.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • As part of the project, the candidate will work on a novel concept for optimizing chemotherapy regimens based on live-cell imaging of cancer cells, drug perfusion, detection of cell fates by a convolutional neural network and optimization of concentration trajectories based on mathematical models of signaling pathways affected by the applied chemotherapeutic drugs.
  • For applications of this concept, the CytoScanner (www.cytoscanner.de), an automated microscope for live-cell imaging inside standard lab incubators, will be used. It can control drug perfusors to optimize concentration trajectories of chemotherapeutic drugs based on live-cell imaging, model calibration and reinforcement learning.
Prerequisites
  • We are looking for an open-minded and creative candidate with background in biotechnology, biology, pharmacology, physics, mathematics or related subjects who is affine to technical developments.
  • Programming skills (preferentially MATLAB, Python, R) are highly desirable.
  • Basic skills in mammalian cell culture and other molecular biology techniques would be advantageous.
  • Applicants should be fluent in English and possess good communication and team working skills.
